A short story by yours truly.
This is before Soren has a mate, because I forgot her name already. >.<
Soren said goodnight to his best friend, Gylfie, and also Twilight and Digger. Soren was tired after a long night of getting bonk coals from a forest fire raging in Ambala. He was thinking about his mentor, Ezylryb, and how frail he was getting.
Many thoughts filled Soren's head as he went to sleep.
Soon, he woke up. It was first black. He set out over the sea. At first he thought it was the sea of Hoolemere, but then he felt the change in winds and realized he was flying over the Bitter Sea. In fact, he could see the fabled birthplace of Hoole just up ahead. He thought he saw smoke rising. "I'd better go check it out," Soren thought to himself.
He saw four owls. A pygmy, two spotted owls, and a great horned. He decided to light down and have a rest. The older of the two spotted owls looked up. "Hey there, young'un! What brings you here?" he asked. "I'm Soren," said Soren. "I'm Grank," said the spotted owl. This startled Soren. Wasn't the first collier named Grank? The Great Horned stepped forward. "I'm Theo, nice to meet you, Soren," he said. The Pygmy also stepped up. "And I'm Phineas!" he said. The younger spotted owl stayed where he was. "And I'm H-!" he said before Grank glared at him. Soren went wide eyed. "Hoole?" he said. Grank looked at him curiously. "How would you know," he asked suspiciously. "I come from the Great Ga'hoole Tree! Grank, you are the first collier! And Hoole, you are a king! I think I must be dreaming!" Soren said. "A king?" asked Hoole innocently. "Great Ga'hoole Tree?" asked Grank. "Where is this, 'Great Ga'hoole Tree?'"
"In the sea of Hoolemere," replied Soren. Then he realized why they were confused. "You haven't discovered it yet, but you will. There will be great battles to be fought, and Hoole, you will be king of this tree and you will set the greatest legacy of owlkind!
"Show us to this... Great Tree," said Grank. "We leave in the morning."
So the next morning, the 5 owls flew off.
A few days later, after battling Katabatic winds and such, they made it to the S'yrthghar, as it was then known. Soren kept referring to it as "the Southern Kingdoms," and these owls wondered why. Soren wondered why they called it "S'yrthghar." Probably because that is what they called it back in these times of war, he thought to himself.
"We're almost there. We're flying of the Sea of Hoolemere now," Soren announced. "The Sea of S'yrthghar," replied Grank. "I've flown it several times. Once I lighted down on that island over there, barren it is. So barren."
Soren looked to see where the old spotted owl was pointing. That was the Island of Hoole, but there was nary a living thing on it. "I don't understand, the Great Tree is gone!" Soren gasped. The tree hadn't grown yet!, Soren thought. If Hoole had been born and the Tree hadn't begun to grow, how could he possibly be ruling the Great Tree before he died?
Just then Soren heard a whispering of the winds. The loss of a friend will soon after bring you great understanding... it seemed to be saying. "Who said that?" Soren gaped. "Who said what?" asked young Hoole. The other owls looked at Soren in confusion. Soren realized only he had heard it. "Uh... nevermind. I must be hearing things," he said. But he wasn't hearing things, he heard those words as clearly as you could see the beak on his face.
Soren felt himself being shaken. "Soren, wake up!" It was Gylfie. All thoughts and memories of the dream vanished. "I just had the strangest dream," said Soren. "But I can't remember it!"
"It's your starsight. You will remember you dream when the time comes that it needs to be remembered," Gylfie reassured him. "Every time I remember a dream, I figure it out a split second before its too late, sometimes after!" he said. "Let's hope its a split second before!" exclaimed Soren.
The End
Aaaand we all know (well you know if you have read the legends) what happens with the "loss of a friend" and a "great understanding." Rock on! Peace out! Let me know what you think!
